EATING OUT 2001

DAVID GREEN AT THORNHAM HALL

Old country estates are being opened up for all kinds of reason these days and a few are offering the chance to eat,
Thornham Hall near Eye in Suffolk, was once an important country seat for the Henniker family. Much of the hall was destroyed by fire in the 1950's to be replaced by a more modest dwelling, but the original stable block still remains and part of it has been converted into cottages However, the latest conversion has attracted more public interest, the old coach house is now a restaurant that opens for lunch on four days and for dinner on three evenings.
I went along with my wife to what is now called The Restaurant at Thornham Hall, run by
Lesley Henniker-Major and chef Julie Huff
Approached through a arch which leads into the old stable yard, the restaurant is light and airy and judging by the night of our visit, the ambience is good. What is presumably the original brick floor has been preserved, tables have enough space in between for reasonable privacy and there is a lounge area for pre-dinner drinks and post dinner coffee or tea.
I started with the crispy duck and fresh salad. The meat  was bathed in a beautiful honey and ginger sauce which I really enjoyed.
